A useful water test is chosen around the water source and the decision the homeowner needs to make. An initial on-site evaluation can help screen conditions such as hardness, pH, iron, and other characteristics related to scale, staining, taste, or odor. Questions involving bacteria, nitrate, PFAS, lead, arsenic, or another health-related contaminant may require a sample analyzed by a Pennsylvania-accredited drinking-water laboratory.
Private-well owners are responsible for monitoring their own water. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends annual private-well testing for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids, and pH, with additional testing when local conditions or a change in the water create a reason to look further.
Wenger explains which findings can be evaluated in the home, when independent laboratory testing is the better next step, and how confirmed results affect treatment-system selection.
